Spotlight: Afia Saabea Owusu Konadu, AIBODY Emerging Leader in Physiology Science and Research
AIBODY is delighted to present Afia Saabea Owusu Konadu, our inaugural Emerging Leader in Physiology Science and Research.
As a graduate student, Afia Saabea regularly uses AI-assisted tools to help clarify complex physiology concepts, generate practice questions aligned with learning objectives, and reinforce her understanding of challenging physiological principles. As a researcher, she utilizes AI to edit and proofread manuscripts, brainstorm research ideas, and explore experimental methodologies. Just as importantly, AI has enabled Afia Saabea to become a better science communicator, helping her prepare for oral presentations and elevator pitches, organize ideas, and present her research more clearly to both scientific and general audiences.
Afia Saabea is a third-year PhD student in the Integrated Physiology and Molecular Medicine program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Her research examines how changes in the peripheral nervous system that control the heart contribute to fatal ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in patients with type 2 diabetes. Ultimately, her goal is to identify new therapies that can improve cardiovascular outcomes for high-risk patients.
“Physiology can sometimes feel abstract when learned only through text and memorization, but AIBODY’s interactive interface makes these concepts much easier to understand,” Afia Saabea says about AIBODY’s unique approach to the teaching of physiology that bridges the gap between fundamental science and practical skills. She finds the platform most effective when it combines visualization with real-life clinical scenarios, making learning complex physiological systems more engaging, intuitive, and memorable.
Afia Saabea will be presenting her research on the role of sympathetic activation - α1 adrenergic receptor axis in diabetes-related cardiac vagal neuronal and myocardial dysfunction at the American Physiology Summit 2026 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
